Innovative sol-gel derived silica-alginate seed coating for targeted enzyme and siderophore delivery to protect seedlings against Pythium. This scalable, sustainable solution enhances root development and pathogen resistance, offering a microplastic-free alternative.

Overview

The hybrid sol-gel seed coating is a groundbreaking solution designed to deliver targeted enzymes and siderophores directly to seeds, providing enhanced protection against Pythium pathogens. Utilizing a silica-alginate (SA) matrix, this coating activates in high-moisture environments to release β-1,3-glucanase and a dual-siderophore system. These bioactives create a defensive bio-shield that shortens the infection window and restricts pathogen access, promoting accelerated root development and reduced pathogen motility.

Technical specifications

The SA matrix is a durable, porous scaffold that ensures bioactive stability until environmental conditions trigger activation. The β-1,3-glucanase enzyme degrades pathogen cell walls and acts as a biostimulant, while siderophores create an iron-depleted zone to inhibit Pythium. The ethanol-based sol-gel process is microplastic-free and adheres to non-pesticidal regulatory requirements, making it industrially scalable. The coating's mechanical durability meets ESTA Heubach standards for a dust-free finish.

Technology readiness level

Currently at TRL 2, this technology is in the early stages of development. Future validation aims include optimizing the coating's safety and efficacy, verifying pathogen suppression through infection assays, and establishing the product's shelf-life through bioactive retention monitoring.
