A low-cost, in-process viscosity measurement method that uses a drip cone, stopwatch, and calibration curve to quickly assess product flow during blending. It enables fast, low-skill, in-situ ingredient adjustments to keep final viscosity within specification. Validated in viscous product manufacturing with Brookfield 7,000–9,000 cps and can be adopted in about two weeks.

Overview

A low-cost, in-process viscosity checking method for liquid or viscous products during blending and manufacturing. The operator collects material from the batch using a drip cone, measures the time for the product to drip using a stopwatch, and compares the drip time against a calibration curve. This allows operators to predict final viscosity and make in-situ adjustments to ingredients before production is complete.

The method is designed for situations where the batch is accessible while blending. It can be used either after all ingredients are added or between additions. It supports practical manufacturing control rather than a full laboratory instrument: the drip time value is translated to viscosity only through the calibration curve, but when set up, it is a rapid line-side check that helps avoid batches entering a final-stage specification errors.

Test specifications

The measurement uses a drip cone with an aperture selected according to the product consistency. The operator scoops a representative sample, starts the timer, and records the time for the product to drip. That time is interpreted with a calibration curve that is usually generated during normal production once the correct cone has been identified.

Key features:

  • Testing takes roughly 30–60 seconds
  • Requires little skill to operate
  • Equipment is cheap and portable enough for each mixing tank or station
  • Implements easy to clean and sanitize
  • No regular maintenance or calibration
  • Works with a range of viscosity levels, including acidic and electrolyte-containing materials
  • Can be implemented in about two weeks per operation

The method is best applied at the final stage of blending or between addition steps. It is intentionally simple and fast, and it is intended to assist with on-site processing decisions rather than to replace laboratory characterization.

Technology readiness level

The method has been tested and adopted in viscous manufacturing for products in the 7,000–9,000 cps Brookfield range, indicating it is already used in practice at least in one application. For broader deployment, the next validation stage includes evaluating the consistency and flow behavior of the specific product by hand, selecting the correct drip cone and aperture, then generating a calibration curve under routine operation.

Once the calibration curve is in place, readings can be compared against in-line viscosity and raw ingredient additions can be adjusted in real time. This places the solution at the pilot to production validation stage for the target product class, with additional site- and product-specific calibration needed for a new material.
