Zero-waste biorefinery platform that converts fibrous residues from industrial pectin extraction into multiple high-value bio-based products, including residual pectin, polysaccharides, industrial fibers, bio-composites, and activated biochar for environmental remediation.
This project delivers an integrated zero-waste biorefinery designed to valorize fibrous residues generated during industrial pectin extraction from citrus peels and apple pomace. Rather than treating these side streams as low-value waste, the approach applies a cascade processing strategy that sequentially recovers residual pectin, polysaccharides, and functional oligosaccharides, then converts cellulose-rich solids into sustainable industrial fibers and bio-composites, and finally produces activated biochar from residual lignocellulosic biomass. The result is a multi-product platform that creates several revenue streams, reduces disposal costs, replaces petroleum-based materials, and supports carbon-negative outcomes through biochar production.
Key features:
The project is structured over 18 months across five phases, beginning with characterization of pectin side streams and progressing through extraction optimization, fiber and composite development, biochar production, and pilot-scale integration. The final phase combines process integration, techno-economic and life-cycle assessments, pilot-scale validation, and development of an industrial implementation roadmap. Current readiness is at laboratory and pilot-scale demonstration stage, with a clear pathway toward industrial deployment for circular valorization of agro-industrial residues.
