IoT-based tracking and monitoring system for commercial bumblebee colonies designed to support epidemiological assessments, ensure proper colony disposal, and reduce disease transmission risks to native pollinators. Enables R&D institutions and regulators to collect measurement data throughout colony lifespan and post-use displacement.
This solution addresses the urgent need for improved management and regulation of commercially produced bumblebee colonies used for greenhouse and field crop pollination. Commercial bumblebees are imported globally and interact with native pollinators through shared flower use, creating significant risks of parasite and pathogen transmission. Research indicates that up to 71% of commercial bumblebees carry gut parasites such as Nosema, which can spread to wild populations.
The offering is an IoT-based monitoring system that tracks bumblebee colonies during their active pollination lifespan and after displacement, providing regulators and researchers with critical data to enforce best practices, conduct epidemiological assessments, and ensure correct disposal of used colonies. The system can be deployed on standalone bumblebee colonies or combined with honeybee hive monitoring in the same foraging area for comprehensive pollinator health surveillance.
Key features:
The technology is at the prototype stage, having been developed by an IoT start-up specializing in pollination support and pollinator protection. The system has been prototyped for both bumblebee colony and honeybee hive monitoring applications. The current proposal seeks collaboration with an R&D institution to lead the full validation process, including field trials to demonstrate effectiveness in real-world pollination environments and to refine the system for regulatory and commercial adoption.
