Innovative keratin-based nutrient carrier designed for resilient oral delivery of micronutrients, enhancing absorption and ensuring precise intestinal release. Offers superior protection and release control, suitable for diverse nutritional applications.
The keratin-based oral delivery system represents a breakthrough in the controlled release of micronutrients such as vitamins and minerals. This innovative carrier is engineered to resist enzymatic degradation and withstand the low pH conditions of the stomach, enabling precise intestinal release. The system's durability is attributed to keratin's high cysteine content, which forms disulfide bonds that stabilize the protein and protect active ingredients through harsh gastric environments. This broad binding capacity enhances formulation flexibility across various micronutrients, supporting optimized absorption and bioavailability.
The keratin carrier's unique properties allow for strategic release timing based on its isoelectric point (pI) of 4.0 to 6.0. In acidic conditions below its pI, the keratin remains intact and stable, safeguarding actives from premature breakdown. Above its pI in the intestine, it transitions to a negative charge and swells, facilitating targeted release. The system is designed to be compatible with standard vitamin and mineral supplement formats such as tablets, gummies, and chews. Future validation plans include formulation development, in vitro testing for stability, and evaluation of nutrient release profiles and bioaccessibility.
Currently at TRL 4, this technology is focused on in vitro testing to confirm its stability and targeted release capabilities. The next six months aim to achieve TRL 5, with plans to map regulatory pathways for future commercialization. This structured progression will establish keratin-based nutrient delivery systems as a viable option for modern nutritional solutions.
