Develop cost-effective, lightweight PET bottles that maintain structural integrity and carbonation retention for carbonated soft drinks, aligning with sustainability goals and reducing environmental impact.

Overview

The project focuses on developing lightweight PET bottles that are both cost-effective and environmentally sustainable. These bottles are designed to maintain essential qualities such as structural integrity, carbonation retention, and durability, crucial for carbonated soft drinks (CSDs). By optimizing material formulations, structural designs, and manufacturing processes, the solution aims to align with sustainability goals while meeting performance standards.

Technical specifications

Key Features:

  • Material Selection: Advanced polymer materials are evaluated to achieve a balance between weight reduction and performance.
  • Structural Design: Computer-aided design (CAD) software is used to model bottle designs that focus on structural integrity while achieving lightweighting.
  • Manufacturing Process Optimization: Collaboration with manufacturing partners ensures efficient and sustainable production processes.
  • Performance Testing: Prototypes undergo rigorous testing to assess mechanical properties, carbonation retention, and shelf-life.
  • Life Cycle Assessment: New bottle designs are analyzed for environmental impact, recyclability, and carbon footprint compared to conventional PET bottles.
Technology readiness level

The technology is currently at TRL 4, indicating that the solution has been validated in a laboratory setting and is ready for further development and testing in operational environments.

About Michigan State University

Michigan State University is a major public land‑grant research university with a comprehensive academic portfolio and a large research enterprise. Industry partners engage through an on‑campus U.S. Department of Energy national user facility and shared core laboratories with user access. The university provides a chemical process scale‑up pilot plant on Michigan’s lakeshore, a research and technology park, and a Grand Rapids health innovation campus linking researchers with clinical partners. A statewide extension network supports field deployment and workforce training across Michigan’s manufacturing corridor. Research is backed by competitive federal funding from NSF, NIH, DOE, USDA, and DoD, while dedicated tech transfer and corporate engagement teams—supported by an affiliated research foundation—accelerate IP, licensing, startups, and sponsored research.
