A low-cost electronic nose (e-nose) using MOS sensors, chemometrics, and machine learning to detect N2O, CO2, and CH4 from soil with ±5% accuracy. Features wireless real-time monitoring and solar-powered operation for multi-season autonomous deployment in greenhouse environments.

Overview

This solution offers a low-cost electronic nose (e-nose) designed to detect and quantify greenhouse gas emissions (N2O, CO2, and CH4) from soil in greenhouse environments. Built on metal oxide semiconductor (MOS) sensor technology combined with chemometrics and machine learning algorithms, the system delivers a proposed detection accuracy of ±5%. The device is wireless, real-time, and solar-powered, enabling autonomous operation across multiple growing seasons. By providing an affordable alternative to expensive laboratory-grade equipment, this technology addresses a critical gap in agricultural gas sensing for greenhouse operators, researchers, and environmental managers seeking continuous, on-site emissions monitoring.

Technical specifications

Core technology:

  • MOS sensor array for gas detection
  • Chemometric analysis and machine learning regression models for quantification
  • Wireless data transmission for real-time, on-site monitoring
  • Solar-based energy system for extended autonomous operation
  • Online system architecture designed around operator needs

Target gases and performance:

  • Nitrous oxide (N2O), carbon dioxide (CO2), and methane (CH4)
  • Proposed accuracy of ±5% validated against CG-MS reference standards
  • Designed for continuous soil-based emissions monitoring in greenhouses

Validation approach:

  • Sensor outputs cross-validated with CG-MS grade equipment results
  • Regression models assessed using statistical, chemometric, and machine learning criteria
  • Built upon prior research group's experience with MOS sensors across food-grade and agricultural materials
Technology readiness level

The technology is currently at an early-to-mid stage of development (TRL 4–5). The research team has built three different e-nose prototypes and validated MOS sensor performance across multiple applications including essential oils, cocoa, tea, and various fruits. The next phase involves redesigning an existing prototype to specifically quantify N2O, CO2, and CH4, followed by preliminary greenhouse deployment with varying chemical concentrations. The project is planned for a one-year timeline with a team of two researchers possessing engineering and data science expertise. Greenhouse facilities at UIUC are available to begin testing immediately, supporting rapid progression toward field validation and commercial readiness.

About Sigma Xi Full member

Sigma Xi, The Scientific Research Honor Society, is an international, multidisciplinary honor society that recognizes achievement in scientific and engineering research. Founded in 1886, the organization fosters a community of researchers across diverse disciplines, nations, and generations. Members are elected based on their noteworthy achievements as original investigators in fields of pure or applied science. The society operates through a network of local chapters at universities, government laboratories, and industry research centers, and it maintains a committee process for those seeking nomination. Its core activities include promoting integrity in research, hosting professional development forums, and advancing the public's understanding of science through various publications and outreach initiatives.

For members, Sigma Xi provides a platform to connect with peers, prospective employers, and mentors, effectively expanding professional networks and collaboration opportunities. The society supports the research enterprise by offering grants-in-aid of research, career development resources, and opportunities to engage in leadership and scientific advocacy. By honoring scientific contributions and facilitating interdisciplinary cooperation, Sigma Xi serves as a hub for both established professionals and students, helping them advance their careers while contributing to the broader scientific community. Through partnerships with major national organizations, the society also influences scientific policy and supports STEM education efforts globally.
