Low-cost ketogenic precursor for weight management

Company

A solid, tasteless polyester made from low molecular weight polymers of beta-hydroxybutyrate that is fermented slowly in the colon to release satiety signals over several hours. It offers a defined chemical approach to weight management for pet food and treats, avoiding the palatability and GI issues of free ketone salts.

Overview

This solution is a low-cost, solid, tasteless ketogenic precursor designed for weight management in companion animals. It is based on low molecular weight polymers of beta-hydroxybutyrate (BHB), a naturally occurring ketone body, engineered to be fermented slowly by gut bacteria in the colon. Instead of releasing BHB all at once, the polymer is tuned to release BHB and short-chain fatty acids such as butyrate over several hours. Both BHB and butyrate are established satiety signals: BHB acts through the HCAR2 receptor, while butyrate stimulates GLP-1 and PYY release from the gut. This provides a defined chemical signal for appetite control, distinct from fiber-bulk approaches that rely on viscosity.

Because the ingredient is a solid polyester rather than a free ketone salt or ester, it avoids the poor palatability and gastrointestinal issues commonly associated with those forms. It is also designed to mill directly into existing kibble, wet food, or treats without requiring reformulation of the base diet.

Technical specifications

Key features:

  • Low molecular weight polymers of beta-hydroxybutyrate tuned for slow colonic fermentation
  • Releases BHB and short-chain fatty acids (e.g., butyrate) over several hours to support satiety signaling
  • Solid, tasteless polyester form that avoids palatability and GI issues of free ketone salts
  • Compatible with standard kibble, wet food, and treat manufacturing processes
  • Produced using cost-effective methods from commercially available polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHA), avoiding the need for new biomanufacturing infrastructure
  • Molecular weight can be tuned to control the amount and rate of BHB release

Validation status:

  • Lab-scale mouse data demonstrate the material is fermented and tolerated at up to 20% of the diet
  • The ingredient does not require the diet to be built around it
Technology readiness level

This technology is in the early-to-mid development stage. Lab-scale feasibility has been demonstrated in mice, showing fermentation and tolerability at up to 20% of the diet. The next validation phases include confirming the material survives extrusion and thermal processing across the moisture and temperature ranges relevant to kibble, wet food, and treats; conducting dose-ranging tolerability and palatability studies in the target species; and running a feeding trial to measure healthy-weight endpoints such as satiety, food-seeking behavior, body condition, and fat mass. Regulatory work is planned to proceed in parallel using the same safety and characterization data.
