Plant growth-promoting bacteria and actinomycetes applied as seed coatings to enhance soybean productivity, nutrient use efficiency, and drought tolerance. Builds on validated maize field results and seeks partners for sequencing and field trials to extend the technology to soybean production.
This research program develops microbial seed-coating inoculants that improve crop growth, nutrient use efficiency, abiotic stress tolerance, and disease resistance. The team has previously validated plant growth-promoting and drought-tolerance traits of bacterial and actinomycete isolates in laboratory and field trials on maize, and now seeks to extend the approach to soybean cultivation in South Africa. The work targets sustainable food production by integrating biotechnology with conventional agricultural practices, with particular relevance for regions facing water scarcity and soil nutrient limitations.
The microbial isolates have completed laboratory characterization and greenhouse validation on maize, with field-level confirmation of improved maize productivity and drought tolerance. The next stage is field validation on soybean, including rhizosphere metagenomic and metatranscriptomic profiling, requiring sequencing collaboration and approximately $65,000 in funding over an estimated 18 months. The technology is positioned at an advanced validation stage, moving toward broader agricultural deployment pending successful soybean field trials.
North-West University is a comprehensive public research university serving a large, diverse student body across three campuses in Potchefstroom, Mahikeng and Vanderbijlpark. Industry collaboration flows through a Technology Transfer and Innovation Support office that guides IP protection, licensing and spinout pathways, and an enterprise unit that delivers contract research and tailored consulting to companies. Its footprint—adjacent to Gauteng’s industrial corridor and embedded in the North West Province—offers convenient access to partners, while employer fairs across campuses connect corporate recruiters with talent. Research is supported by South Africa’s National Research Foundation and other national and international programmes, backed by Platinum-tier Good Financial Grant Practice certification for grant governance. Standard agreements and a defined research‑contracts framework help corporate R&D teams engage efficiently.
