A novel microemulsion system enhances solubility and bioavailability of lipophilic nutrients through transdermal delivery, bypassing digestion and first-pass metabolism for improved absorption and controlled release.
This groundbreaking microemulsion technology is designed to enhance the solubility, absorption, and bioavailability of lipophilic micronutrients by using a low-energy emulsification process. The system forms stable oil-in-water nanodroplets that facilitate transdermal uptake, offering a non-invasive alternative to oral delivery. This platform is particularly beneficial for individuals with fat malabsorption issues, as it bypasses the gastrointestinal tract and first-pass metabolism, ensuring direct, consistent, and sustained absorption through the skin. It is adaptable for a variety of lipophilic nutrients across the health, nutrition, and wellness sectors.
Key features:
This technology is currently at TRL 4, having been validated in vitro with high absorption rates. Future validation plans include optimizing formulations for different micronutrients and conducting stability and safety testing to confirm tolerability, with a pathway for further development and commercialization.
The Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) is South Africa’s national applied research organization, operating multi-site campuses with a mission-driven, contract research model that serves government and industry. Industry engagement centers on co-located laboratories, accredited testing, and pilot-scale platforms that help companies de-risk scale-up and validate compliance. Prototyping workshops and demonstration testbeds support rapid design–build–test cycles, and on-campus collaboration spaces enable supplier development. Research is backed by South Africa’s public research funding and competitive industry contracts, with added support from international development and research programs. A dedicated technology transfer office manages IP, licensing, and spinout formation, with streamlined pathways for NDAs and facility access.
