The modular and scalable process developed by 5REDO efficiently converts post-consumer HDPE into high-purity waxes suitable for industrial applications such as coatings and adhesives. The process addresses common challenges in HDPE post-consumer resin (PCR) valorization, such as feedstock variability and product selectivity, while ensuring consistent output quality. The end-product waxes can be tailored to various specifications, supporting the circular economy by transforming waste into valuable industrial resources.
Technical specifications
The process involves four key steps:
- Zeolite-catalyzed thermal depolymerization: Conducted in a high-performance extruder, this step ensures precise temperature control and efficient degassing, minimizing by-products and enabling consistent depolymerization.
- Fractional distillation: Low molecular weight oligomers are recovered, enhancing selectivity for long-chain oligomers.
- Nanofiltration: This step polishes the oligomers, removing volatile impurities and improving color and odor.
- Repolymerization: Using a metallocene catalyst in a continuous stirred tank reactor (CSTR), the molecular weight is adjusted to produce waxes tailored for specific industrial uses. The process is energy-efficient, free of heavy metals, and compatible with existing infrastructure.
Technology readiness level
Currently, the technology is at TRL 3. A five-step plan is in place to advance its readiness. This includes optimizing depolymerization, refining recovery and purification steps, and adjusting the process for different end-product specifications. The validation plan also includes environmental benchmarking and energy efficiency assessments to further enhance the process's commercial viability and sustainability.
