Innovative nano-formulation utilizing Mentha-derived volatiles immobilized in graphene oxide to suppress Pythium pathogens, enhance crop growth, and promote soil health. Demonstrates significant disease incidence reduction and improved plant performance.
The nano-encapsulated antifungal volatile seed formulation is designed to control soil-borne plant pathogens such as Pythium aphanidermatum and Fusarium oxysporum. It leverages volatile organic compounds (VOCs) derived from Mentha leaves, including carvone, caryophyllene, limonene, and menthol, to suppress pathogen activity. The combined VOC profile—particularly carvone—aims to reduce pre- and post-emergence damping off in crops, promote growth, and activate defense mechanisms in pathogen-rich soils.
The formulation uses graphene oxide to immobilize Mentha-derived volatiles, enabling sustained release of antifungal compounds directly at the infection site in the soil. Reported performance includes disease incidence reduction of 88–89%, along with improved seed germination and increased plant height, contributing to higher crop yield. The approach is also intended to support soil microbiome health as part of the overall crop protection strategy.
Currently at TRL 5, the technology has undergone laboratory testing and is moving toward greenhouse trials and multi-location field trials to further validate efficacy and support scaling up to bulk production. Future validation steps will include compliance with EU regulations and preparation for market entry.
