NanoClair is an air sanitization device featuring a TiO2 and silver nanoparticle photocatalytic coating that decontaminates airborne pathogens and degrades volatile organic compounds. Validated against SARS-CoV-2 with log 6 reduction and VOCs with up to log 3 reduction, it offers a single-device solution for indoor air purification in commercial and industrial settings.

Overview

NanoClair is an air sanitization device developed by Clairco that uses a proprietary photocatalytic coating combining titanium dioxide (TiO2) and silver nanoparticles (AgNP) to neutralize airborne pathogens and degrade volatile organic compounds (VOCs). As air passes through the device, high-energy radicals generated on the coated substrate disrupt microbial cellular membranes and photo-degrade organic pollutants on contact. The device integrates UVC light, mechanical filtration, and the AgNP-TiO2 coating to deliver multi-layered air decontamination. NanoClair has been validated against SARS-CoV-2, achieving log 6 viral reduction, and against VOCs such as isobutylene, achieving up to log 3 reduction. Designed for commercial buildings, offices, malls, and industrial environments, NanoClair offers a compact, single-device approach to indoor air purification without requiring major structural modifications.

Technical specifications

Core technology:

  • Photocatalytic substrate coated with TiO2 and silver nanoparticles (AgNP)
  • UVC light source activates the photocatalytic reaction on the coating surface
  • Mechanical filtration layer captures particulates before photocatalytic treatment
  • High-energy radicals generated on the substrate degrade VOCs and perturb microbial cell membranes

Validated performance:

  • Log 6 reduction of SARS-CoV-2 (E and S genes), confirmed via real-time PCR in triplicate testing
  • Up to log 3 reduction of VOC (isobutylene) in chamber testing with the device in active mode
  • Antimicrobial action triggered immediately upon contact between microorganisms and the coated surface

Key features:

  • Single-device solution combining pathogen inactivation and VOC degradation
  • Compatible with existing HVAC retrofits as part of Clairco's broader indoor air quality platform
  • Designed for continuous operation in occupied commercial spaces
Technology readiness level

NanoClair is at an advanced stage of development, having completed laboratory validation against SARS-CoV-2 and representative VOCs. Testing was conducted in controlled chambers using real-time PCR and triplicate protocols to confirm reproducible results. Ongoing and planned validation efforts include broader VOC testing, achieving log 6 VOC reductions in shorter timeframes, and efficacy testing against microorganisms relevant to food spoilage in dairy processing. The device is positioned for commercial deployment, with Clairco already delivering IoT-enabled air quality and HVAC optimization solutions across millions of square feet of commercial space. The technology is ready for pilot deployments and scaling in commercial, institutional, and industrial environments seeking integrated air sanitization.

About Clairco

Clairco is a Bengaluru-based startup founded in 2018 that provides IoT and AI-driven solutions for building energy optimization and indoor air quality management. The company has developed a proprietary approach that retrofits existing HVAC systems with nano-tech air filtration and IoT monitoring sensors. By combining this hardware with AI-powered software, Clairco optimizes space utilization and reduces HVAC energy consumption for commercial buildings, aiming to provide clean air and energy efficiency as a service without the need for expensive structural retrofits.

These solutions are designed to help building owners, such as offices and malls, achieve net-zero emission goals, improve operational efficiency, and maintain high air quality standards. By offering a performance-based, Zero-CapEx model, Clairco enables clients to monitor real-time air quality and energy usage, ensuring accountability through measurable results. The technology has been deployed across millions of square feet in commercial spaces, helping to reduce carbon emissions while providing cost-effective environmental management for large-scale facilities.
