A novel nanoformulated protein-based bioinsecticide using Oryzacystatin-II encapsulated in chitosan nanoparticles to target brown planthopper in rice. This solution offers enhanced stability, bioavailability, and eco-friendly pest control.

Overview

The nanoformulated protein bioinsecticide is an innovative solution targeting the brown planthopper, a major pest affecting rice crops. Utilizing Oryzacystatin-II, a rice-derived cysteine protease inhibitor, this bioinsecticide is encapsulated in chitosan nanoparticles. This formulation enhances the stability and bioavailability of the protein, allowing for effective foliar application that improves penetration and persistence on rice plants. The mechanism of action involves inhibiting gut proteases in the pest, leading to impaired digestion, starvation, and mortality, thereby offering a sustainable and environmentally friendly alternative to chemical pesticides.

Technical specifications
  • Nanoencapsulation: Oryzacystatin-II is encapsulated in chitosan nanoparticles, enhancing stability and enabling controlled release.
  • Application: Designed for foliar application for enhanced plant penetration and persistence.
  • Mechanism of Action: Inhibits digestive enzymes in the brown planthopper, leading to starvation and mortality.
  • Eco-friendly: Uses rice-derived protein and biodegradable chitosan, ensuring minimal off-target effects and environmental impact.
Technology readiness level

Currently at TRL-4, this bioinsecticide formulation has been validated in controlled environments. The next phase involves optimizing nanoencapsulation parameters, characterizing nanoparticles, and conducting efficacy trials under glasshouse and field conditions. Supported by sponsored research, the solution aims to advance to TRL-5/6 with larger-scale trials and regulatory preparations.
