Bio-derived melanin extracted from Morkaraman sheep wool offers a natural, low-cost active ingredient for sunscreen and skincare products. The pigment absorbs and converts harmful ultraviolet radiation and can be incorporated into topical formulations to protect human skin from sun damage.

Overview

This solution leverages biologically derived melanin extracted from Morkaraman sheep wool as a natural active ingredient for UV-protective skincare products. Melanin is the only known natural pigment that neutralizes ultraviolet radiation by converting it into energy, and it has additionally been shown to protect against radioactivity. By sourcing melanin from sheep wool through acid treatment, the approach provides a renewable, low-cost alternative to synthetic UV filters used in conventional sunscreens and cosmetic formulations.

Technical specifications

Key features:

  • Melanin is extracted and purified from Morkaraman sheep wool using acid treatment, enabling large-scale production from an abundant natural source
  • The pigment absorbs, reflects, and transmits UV light in ways previously characterized by spectroscopic methods
  • Light absorption properties of thin melanin films have already been validated in solar cell prototype experiments
  • The extract can be blended into skin care formulations as an active UV-protective ingredient
  • Chemical fading techniques are being studied to reduce the natural brown-black color and improve consumer appeal without compromising UV protection
Technology readiness level

The technology is at an early-to-mid stage of development. Melanin extraction and purification from Morkaraman sheep wool has been demonstrated at the laboratory scale, and thin-film optical properties have been characterized spectroscopically and applied in a solar cell prototype. The next steps include testing UV-protection efficacy in experimental animals, conducting preclinical studies, advancing product formulation and development, and evaluating how chemical fading of the pigment affects its protective performance. The solution is not yet market-ready and requires further validation before commercial deployment.
