Natural product-derived bioresponsive prodrugs for targeted herbivore feeding deterrence in crops

Technology

Company

Chemistry-driven multivalent prodrugs inspired by natural products that activate upon feeding damage, releasing deterrent compounds selectively within the plant. Designed to protect crops from herbivores with reduced environmental impact.

Overview

This solution offers a novel class of bioresponsive prodrugs designed to protect plants from herbivore damage. Inspired by natural product chemistry, these compounds remain inactive until the plant itself triggers activation following feeding damage by herbivores. Once activated, the prodrugs release deterrent compounds that suppress further herbivore feeding. The multivalent design amplifies the natural deterrent activity while enabling adaptation to a variety of plant species. This targeted approach aims to provide effective crop protection while minimizing off-target environmental effects compared to conventional broad-spectrum pesticides.

Technical specifications

Key features:

  • Bioresponsive activation: Prodrugs remain inert until plant-specific enzymatic or chemical triggers—generated during herbivore feeding damage—release the active deterrent moiety
  • Multivalent architecture: Compounds are designed with multiple active units, amplifying the deterrent effect beyond what is achievable with single-molecule natural products
  • Natural product inspiration: Core design principles are derived from a known class of natural feeding deterrents, preserving biological relevance
  • Chemistry-driven synthesis: All compounds are produced through fully synthetic, chemistry-driven routes, ensuring reproducibility and scalability
  • Plant adaptability: The prodrug platform can be tailored for activation by different plant types, broadening potential crop applications
  • Proof-of-concept achieved: Activation by specific plant types has already been experimentally validated
Technology readiness level

The prodrugs have been synthesized and proof-of-concept studies have confirmed activation by specific plant types. The compounds are at an early-to-mid stage of development, with demonstrated feasibility of the bioresponsive activation mechanism. Further validation is needed to assess field efficacy, spectrum of herbivore deterrence, crop safety, and formulation stability before commercial deployment can be pursued.
