Our technology couples conventional mutagenesis technologies with high-throughput screening to find and isolate organisms (e.g. cells, seeds) that have specific nucleotide changes in genomic regions of interest.
Developed and patented by Carlsberg Research Laboratory for improvement of brewing inputs (yeast, hops, barley, etc), the technically - described in publications at FIND-IT, th e platform spun-out of Carlsberg in 2019 as Traitomic.
Importantly, this approach accelerates natural variation and thus is considered non-GMO and therefore companies/partners (including Carlsberg) have been able to bring new strains, ingredients, varieties, products to market without introducing regulatory hurdles. As it usually relies on low-dose chemical mutagenesis as a source for genetic variation, no special tools need to be developed for it to be compatible with most organisms. Accordingly, Traitomic has worked in more than 20 plant species to date as well as more than a dozen microbes - including diverse fungi and strict anaerobes.
Most common to the microbial space, our technology is used to rapidly (10-12 weeks) inactive toxin producing gene or antimicrobial resistance genes, modulate process traits to improve scaling, and rewire metabolism. But nearly anything is possible (with the exception of introduction of new genetic material).
We would welcome any conversations with investigators interested in knowing more about our approach and discussing how it might be useful to their strain improvement, product development needs.

Traitomic is a biotechnology company that provides accelerated trait development services for plants and microbes using traditional, non-GMO breeding techniques. Spun out from the Carlsberg Research Laboratory, the company utilizes proprietary technology platforms, including the LibraryCreator for building genetic libraries and the TraitTracker Procedure, which is based on the FIND-IT methodology for identifying specific genetic variants. By integrating large-scale population generation with high-efficiency selection systems, Traitomic enables the rapid identification and extraction of desired traits such as specific amino acid changes or gene expression modulations. This process allows for surgical precision in trait development across a diverse array of organisms, ranging from legumes, fruits, and cereals to various bacteria and fungi.
Collaborating with partners across the agri-food industry, start-ups, and academic institutions, Traitomic supports customers in accelerating their innovation pipelines to address global food challenges. The company offers tailor-made development plans and operates on a commercial model that seeks reimbursement upon project success. Their methods have been validated through the development of over 100 traits across more than 25 different crops. By providing non-GM solutions that facilitate faster time-to-market and regulatory acceptance, Traitomic helps producers create healthier, more diverse, and sustainable ingredients for both human and animal consumption. Their expertise spans molecular genetics and breeding, offering long-term partnership opportunities for organizations looking to optimize raw materials and biological solutions.
