Advanced air filtration technology combining photocatalysis with functionalized aerogel materials to remove odors, chemicals, and volatile organic compounds (VOCs) from air streams. Compatible with conventional HEPA filtration systems, the solution uses optimized metal coatings on highly porous aerogel substrates to degrade airborne contaminants and inactivate pathogens.
This research proposes a novel air filtration approach that integrates photocatalysis with functionalized aerogel materials to effectively treat odors, chemicals, and volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in conventional HEPA filtration systems. By applying optimized metal coatings such as titanium dioxide (TiO2) and copper (Cu) onto highly porous aerogel substrates, the technology enables light-driven degradation of airborne contaminants that standard HEPA filters cannot address. The solution targets indoor air quality improvement across residential, commercial, healthcare, and industrial environments where chemical odors and VOC exposure are concerns.

The technology is currently at an early research and proof-of-concept stage. Aerogel materials have been fabricated in the laboratory, and a computational model of the internal structure has been developed to simulate sputter-coating deposition of activation materials. Future validation will involve a six-month proof-of-concept study testing different metal coatings in a chamber device designed to replicate HEPA filtration air-flow conditions. Copper coatings will be evaluated first due to their anti-pathogenic properties. Additional studies will be required to optimize coating thickness, material properties, and photocatalytic performance before commercial deployment. The underlying photocatalysis approach is well established, while the integration with aerogel substrates and specific metal coating formulations represent novel contributions requiring further development and validation.
