Novel compostable coatings and adhesives for packaging films

Technology
University

Wageningen Food & Biobased Research offers expertise in developing compostable adhesives and coatings for packaging films using two routes: biodegradable thermoplastic PHA-based dispersions and reversible thermosetting films. Leveraging 25 years of PHA production experience and deep knowledge of reversible chemistry, this offering targets sustainable packaging applications for industry partners.

Overview

This offering addresses the growing demand for compostable packaging solutions by developing novel adhesives and coatings for packaging films. The research explores two complementary technical routes: biodegradable thermoplastic dispersions based on polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHAs), and thermosetting films incorporating reversible bonds that can be triggered to decompose under specific conditions such as temperature or pH changes. These approaches aim to replace conventional petroleum-based packaging materials with sustainable alternatives that meet compostability standards.

The technology is particularly relevant for food and consumer goods companies seeking to meet sustainability targets and comply with emerging regulations on packaging waste. By collaborating with Wageningen Food & Biobased Research (WFBR), partners gain access to a unique combination of materials science expertise, biopolymer production knowledge, and biodegradation testing capabilities.

Technical specifications

Route 1: Biodegradable thermoplastic dispersions

  • PHA-based dispersions including medium-chain-length PHA (mcl-PHA) and amorphous PHA variants
  • Amorphous PHAs offer excellent tack and adhesive properties, making them well-suited for adhesive applications
  • Technology leverages WFBR's 25-year track record in PHA production and fermentation

Route 2: Reversible thermosetting systems

  • Films containing reversible bonds that decompose when triggered by external stimuli (temperature, pH)
  • Tunable hardness properties suitable for varnish coating applications
  • Builds on published review work and ongoing experimental research in reversible thermosets

Key capabilities:

  • Small-scale formulation production and component evaluation
  • Pilot-scale production of promising formulations
  • Access to a network of adhesive, ink, and coating manufacturers
  • Deep expertise in biodegradation testing, including involvement in developing the EN13432 compostability standard
Technology readiness level

The technology is at an early-to-mid development stage. Foundational research and literature reviews are needed to refine specific focus areas and assess freedom to operate. Initial formulation work will be conducted at small scale to evaluate basic component properties, followed by pilot-scale development of the most promising candidates. Joint formulation development with industry partners will then advance the technology toward application-specific validation. The underlying PHA and reversible thermoset technologies have been validated through prior WFBR research, providing a strong foundation for packaging-specific development.
