This proposal introduces a novel class of solder material engineered to overcome the longstanding trade-offs between electrical conductivity, mechanical performance, and thermal stability in modern soldering. Unlike conventional SnPb or SAC solders, this lead-free, entropy-stabilised system is designed to achieve:
• Conductivity improvements up to 60% over SAC305
• Low melting behavior (~170–190 °C) suitable for reflow
• Outstanding creep and fatigue resistance
• High oxidation and corrosion resistance, enabled by germanium passivation
• Enhanced wettability and mechanical bonding for fine-pitch electronics
The University of Sunderland is a career‑focused public university with campuses in Sunderland and London, serving about 28,700 students across the UK and global partners. Industry engages through business‑facing facilities at the city‑centre enterprise and innovation hub, with incubators, co‑working, events, and direct access to academic expertise. Applied manufacturing support is delivered through an in‑house institute working with companies, while proximity to Nissan’s supply chain and the International Advanced Manufacturing Park anchors collaborations in automotive and advanced manufacturing. Clinical translation is strengthened by the medical school and close partnerships with South Tyneside and Sunderland NHS Foundation Trust, enabling joint research and workforce development. Research is supported by competitive UK research‑council and NHS funding, with dedicated teams facilitating KTPs, contracts, IP and spinouts.
