O2X: turning electrolyser oxygen into value

Consulting service
University

Carbon Sources and Conversion at Ruhr-Universität Bochum is seeking industrial partners to identify and develop valuable uses for oxygen-rich streams, including oxygen co-produced in water electrolysis. We combine catalytic reaction engineering, carbon conversion, techno-economic assessment and life-cycle thinking to evaluate whether oxygen can become a value-generating co-product rather than a cost and logistical challenge. Together with partners, we develop and assess application concepts for oxygen-enabled conversion processes, including oxidative upgrading of carbon-containing feedstocks, process intensification and integration with hydrogen and carbon-circularity value chains. Collaboration can range from an initial confidential feasibility assessment to laboratory-scale experimental validation and the joint definition of scale-up, IP and commercialization pathways. We are particularly interested in industrial cases where a locally available oxygen stream, a carbon-containing feedstock and an identifiable product or process benefit can be connected. Partners bring their specific stream, application challenge or target market; we contribute scientific assessment, experimental development and an independent evaluation of technical, economic and environmental viability. The activity is based at Ruhr-Universität Bochum, Germany, and can be structured as bilateral research, publicly funded collaborative projects or innovation-oriented partnerships.

About Ruhr-Universität Bochum

Ruhr‑Universität Bochum is a large, comprehensive public research university in Germany’s Ruhr metropolitan region. Industry engagement is embedded through co‑located applied research institutes and shared labs, a nearby research and technology park, and a startup center for spinouts and collaboration. Clinical translation is enabled by a university hospital network linking multiple teaching hospitals, providing access to patients, trials, and real‑world validation environments. Research is supported by competitive funding from the German Research Foundation, federal and state ministries, and European Union programs. A dedicated technology transfer office manages IP, licensing, and standardized collaboration agreements to accelerate partnerships.
