Keratify introduces the OneVivo culture system, a skin-on-chip technology providing comprehensive surfactant testing by maintaining skin barrier function and viability. With TRL 5/6, it supports detailed analysis of surfactants, including repeat dosing and rinse off, utilizing the Nevisense impedance technology.

Overview

The OneVivo culture system represents a breakthrough in surfactant testing by maintaining full skin barrier function and viability. This advanced skin-on-chip technology addresses the limitations of traditional 3D skin models, which fail to replicate the critical processes driving skin irritation from surfactants. By supporting repeat application with rinse off and utilizing the FDA-approved Nevisense impedance technology, OneVivo offers a sensitive analysis of skin barrier integrity, making it ideal for characterizing various surfactants, including those that currently lack viable biological tests.

Technical specifications

Key features:

  • Full skin barrier function: Retains viability to reflect realistic skin responses.
  • Repeat dosing with rinse off: Supports complex surfactant formulations and mild barrier loss testing.
  • Nevisense impedance technology: Provides sensitive analysis of skin barrier changes, from the stratum corneum to the dermis, more effectively than traditional methods.
  • Comprehensive surfactant differentiation: Differentiates anionic and non-ionic surfactants in a dose-dependent manner, with potential for cationic surfactant analysis.
  • Bench-to-clinic application: Nevisense technology is applicable in both laboratory and clinical settings.
Technology readiness level

The OneVivo system is at TRL 5/6, indicating it has been validated in relevant environments and is ready for more extensive testing and optimization. Keratify plans to further validate the system through a fee-for-service structure, collaborating closely with sponsors to ensure comprehensive delivery of studies. Multiple products and problematic surfactants will be tested, optimizing variables such as product dilution, exposure time, and dosing protocols. This will enhance the system's capability to transition from bench to clinic effectively.

About Keratify

Keratify is a biotechnology company that provides a high-fidelity, ex vivo human skin testing platform designed to address the limitations of standard laboratory skin models. By maintaining whole human skin tissue in a lab environment, the company's patented technology allows for more accurate measurement of key biological processes, helping to overcome issues such as rapid tissue deterioration and poor predictive accuracy found in many 3D skin models and animal-based tests. The platform is designed to provide results that better mimic real human skin responses, which is critical for reducing errors in toxicology and compound testing.

This technology is particularly valuable for companies in the cosmetics, pharmaceutical, and medical device sectors that need to conduct dermatology research and development without relying on animal testing. By offering more reliable, human-relevant data, Keratify enables organizations to streamline their R&D processes, navigate regulatory requirements more effectively, and improve the development of new dermatological therapeutics and skin care products. The company currently provides these specialized capabilities through bespoke contract research services.
