Company

BIOM Co. Ltd. is developing an optimized fermentation process to enhance the yield of bacterial lipopeptides with antifungal properties against Z. bailii. This process aims to reduce production costs and improve commercial viability for use in agriculture and food industries.

Overview

BIOM Co. Ltd., a biotechnology spin-off from Chulalongkorn University, is pioneering the optimization of fermentation processes to enhance the yield of bacterial lipopeptides. These compounds, produced by Bacillus species, exhibit potent antifungal properties specifically against Zygosaccharomyces bailii, a challenging spoilage yeast. By improving production efficiency, BIOM Co. Ltd. aims to make these biocontrol agents more commercially viable for agricultural and food industry applications.

Technical specifications
  • Optimization of fermentation medium: Includes the addition of various precursors such as amino acids and fatty acids to enhance lipopeptide synthesis.
  • Fermentation conditions: Process optimization conducted in both 10-L and 300-L fermenters to scale production.
  • Partial purification and quantification: Ensures high concentration and efficacy of lipopeptides.
  • Application: Effective against Z. bailii, with tests showing significant reduction in cell optical density.
Technology readiness level

The technology is currently at TRL 5, indicating that it has been validated in a relevant environment, with ongoing optimization and scaling efforts to enhance production yield and efficacy for commercial applications.
