Overview

This solution focuses on optimizing water use in cropping systems through a multifaceted approach that integrates precision irrigation, soil health, and water conservation technologies. The goal is to improve irrigation efficiency and crop yields while ensuring sustainable water management practices. By developing and implementing validated deficit irrigation models and management guidelines, this approach aims to enhance farmers' ability to manage water resources effectively, promoting economic and environmental sustainability.

Technical specifications

The solution includes several key components:

  • Precision Irrigation: Utilizes technology-driven decision-making tools for efficient water monitoring and management.
  • Soil Health Management: Focuses on maintaining soil quality to support optimal crop growth under water constraints.
  • Water Conservation Technologies: Implements strategies to reduce water use and prioritize less water-intensive crops.
  • Genotype Performance Analysis: Identifies and utilizes crop varieties best suited for limited water conditions.
  • Comprehensive Framework: Integrates water availability, crop choice, and cropping patterns to optimize resource use.

This approach is tailored for rapid adoption by farmers, particularly in regions facing water allocation challenges.

Technology readiness level

The technology readiness level for this solution is 6, indicating that the technology has been demonstrated in a relevant environment and is undergoing further development and validation. The phased implementation plan ensures that the solution can be effectively scaled and adopted by farmers within three years.

About National Root Crops Research Institute

NRCRI is Nigeria’s federal institute dedicated to root and tuber crops, headquartered in Umudike, Abia State, and operating across multiple agro-ecologies via regional outstations. For industry, these sites enable ecological testing and on-farm validation, while extension and demonstration farms accelerate uptake with growers. Biotechnology, tissue-culture, and trait-profiling laboratories generate clean planting materials and support breeding; postharvest and product-development facilities back process optimization and equipment prototyping. The institute is funded by Nigeria’s federal government through the Agricultural Research Council of Nigeria, with additional competitive support from development partners. An Intellectual Property and Technology Transfer Office facilitates IP, licensing, and commercialization with processors and SMEs.
