Overview

This research introduces a breakthrough in probiotic preservation by using pH-responsive biodegradable nanohydrogels. The encapsulation technology significantly enhances the viability and stability of probiotics in low pH beverages. It achieves this by protecting the probiotics from acidic environments both in beverages and the gastrointestinal tract, ensuring they reach the intestine intact and functional. This targeted release mechanism not only improves efficacy but also preserves the taste and texture of the beverages, making it an ideal solution for incorporating probiotics into acidic functional foods and beverages.

Technical specifications

The encapsulation technology employs pH-sensitive polymers and clay particles to form nanohydrogels. These hydrogels provide:

  • Protection in acidic environments: A protective barrier formed by polymers at low pH levels shields probiotics.
  • Precision release and targeted delivery: Probiotics are released through polymer degradation in the intestine’s neutral to mildly alkaline environment, with clay enhancing gut adhesion.
  • Improved storage stability: Encapsulation prevents probiotic degradation over time, even at room temperature.
Technology readiness level

Currently at TRL 4, the technology has undergone preliminary research and is in the optimization phase. Validation plans include assessing encapsulation efficiency, evaluating probiotic viability under storage conditions, and examining release profiles in simulated intestinal fluids. In vitro digestion simulations will further validate the efficacy and safety of the encapsulated probiotics.
