Innovative PHA-based biopolymer coatings aim to extend the shelf-life of fresh produce by up to 90 days. These coatings reduce dehydration, prevent microbial spoilage, and inhibit enzymatic browning while maintaining flavor, texture, and appearance.
Ex Seed introduces a revolutionary approach to extending the shelf-life of fresh produce using PHA-based biopolymer coatings. These coatings leverage the natural properties of Polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHAs) to form a flexible, moisture-retentive barrier on fruits and vegetables. By incorporating natural antimicrobial agents and antioxidants, the coatings are designed to reduce dehydration, prevent spoilage, and inhibit enzymatic browning, potentially extending the shelf-life of produce by up to 60-90 days. This technology ensures that the flavor, texture, and appearance of the produce remain unaffected.
Key features:
Currently at TRL 5, this technology has progressed through laboratory validation and is undergoing further testing. The next steps include comprehensive shelf-life testing and regulatory approval processes to ensure compliance with safety standards and consumer acceptability.
Founded in 2023, Ex Seed is a deep-tech food startup from Bulgaria focusing on plant protein innovation. The founders combined chemical engineering expertise with a sustainability ethos to tackle waste from sunflower oil production – a significant industry in Eastern Europe. Ex Seed is part of an incubator program and is gaining attention for promoting sunflower protein as the next big plant protein.
