AIMPLAS has developed a PHA/PHBv emulsion coating incorporating lipids and cellulose derivatives to enhance barrier performance for compostable packaging. Currently at TRL 5, the coating shows promising results for water and grease resistance.
AIMPLAS introduces a groundbreaking PHA/PHBv emulsion coating designed for sustainable and compostable packaging solutions. This innovative technology incorporates lipids and cellulose derivatives to enhance barrier properties, making it a compelling alternative for eco-friendly packaging applications. The coating has shown promising results in water-vapor transmission and grease-resistance tests, making it an ideal candidate for reducing environmental impact through compostability.
The PHA/PHBv emulsion coating is applied using a wire-wound bar, but it also possesses viscosity properties suitable for spray applications, broadening its versatility. It has been tested on a 265g/m² cardboard substrate with an application thickness of 10-15 µm. Results include a WVTR of 39.6 ± 1.36 g/m²·day at 5-6ºC and 90% RH, and a Cobb120 value of 1 ± 0.5 g/m². The technology is capable of producing 3 L per batch, supporting pilot-plant validation and initial scale-up efforts. Future plans include scaling up to 5–10 kg and optimizing the formulation for different paper substrates.
Currently at TRL 5, this emulsion coating is ready for pilot-plant validation, with ongoing efforts to optimize its compostability and barrier performance. Further development aims to enhance its market readiness and scalability for diverse packaging applications.
AIMPLAS is an independent, non-profit applied research and technology organization in Valencia, serving industry as a sector-focused institute with extensive labs, pilot lines, and certification capabilities. Based on a technology‑park campus, it delivers contract R&D from formulation and prototyping to pre‑industrial trials, with co‑located teams that speed iteration. Accredited laboratories provide compliance testing and regulatory guidance, while industry consortia, training, and short courses connect companies to talent and standards work. Research is supported by competitive European and national funding alongside member and contract revenues. A dedicated technology transfer function supports IP strategy, licensing, and routes to commercialization.
