Plant damage monitoring sensor network for efficient herbicide application

Technology
In development
Company

Innovative sensor network detects plant damage by monitoring signature gas molecules, enabling precise herbicide application. This approach enhances crop yield, reduces chemical usage, and minimizes environmental impact without altering existing herbicides.

Overview

The proposed solution is a cutting-edge sensor network designed to revolutionize how herbicides are applied in agricultural fields. By detecting signature gas molecules like hexanal released during plant damage, this technology allows for precise identification of affected areas. This targeted approach optimizes herbicide use, enhances crop yields, and reduces environmental impact by avoiding unnecessary chemical application across entire fields.

Technical specifications

The sensor network consists of field-deployable units designed to selectively detect specific gas molecules associated with plant damage. Key features include:

  • Environmentally resistant design: Each sensor is equipped with a dust- and humidity-proof mesh cap, ensuring reliable operation in all weather conditions.
  • Multi-crop calibration: Sensors are tailored to detect plant damage across various crops by adjusting chemical affinities at the detection sites.
  • Extensive coverage: Over 100 sensors can be deployed across more than 10 acres, providing comprehensive monitoring capabilities.
  • Real-time alerts: Immediate notifications to field managers enable timely and precise herbicide applications.
Technology readiness level

The sensor network is currently at Technology Readiness Level 6, indicating that it has been demonstrated in a relevant environment. Future validation includes full-season deployment across a large area to further optimize the system and assess its accuracy in real-world conditions.
