Plant-dx is an in-field diagnostic platform that integrates isothermal nucleic acid amplification with CRISPR-Cas systems for rapid, precise detection of GMOs and phytopathogens. Leveraging Cas9, Cas12, and Cas13-based assays with lateral flow readouts, it delivers user-friendly, cost-effective screening for sustainable agriculture.
Plant-dx is an in-field diagnostic platform designed to detect genetically modified organisms (GMOs) and phytopathogens with speed, precision, and ease of use. By combining isothermal nucleic acid amplification methods with CRISPR-Cas detection technologies, Plant-dx overcomes the limitations of conventional laboratory-based techniques such as PCR. The platform empowers farmers, agronomists, and regulators to make timely, informed decisions in the field, supporting food safety, ecological sustainability, and regulatory compliance. Its adaptability for large-scale screening makes it suitable for diverse agricultural settings, from smallholder farms to industrial operations.

Key advantages:
Plant-dx builds on validated CRISPR-Cas detection modules that have already demonstrated effectiveness for plant and human pathogen identification, achieving single-base resolution with lateral flow readout. Future validation will focus on designing and testing sgRNAs targeting T-DNA regions in transgenic plant lines available at KAUST, as well as pathogen-specific and family-conserved sequences evaluated against infected plant samples. The platform is advancing toward translational deployment for agricultural and regulatory applications, with in-house reagent production supporting scalability and field readiness.
King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST) is a graduate-only science and technology university on Saudi Arabia’s Red Sea coast, combining an international research community with large-scale shared instrumentation and campus-wide experimental facilities. Industry partners engage through a research and technology park that hosts corporate R&D on site, alongside core labs, pilot-scale testbeds, and a petascale supercomputing center for rapid scale-up and validation. Its location near the Red Sea and regional energy and materials industries enables field deployments and joint programs. Research is supported by substantial institutional investment and competitive national and international sponsors. A dedicated innovation and technology transfer office manages IP, licensing, startup incubation, and corporate partnership services.
