Research-driven solution leveraging plant extracts and antagonistic fungi (Coniothyrium sp.) to inhibit the growth and viability of Sclerotinia sclerotiorum, a major plant pathogen. Offers a natural alternative to synthetic fungicides for crop protection.

Overview

This research program focuses on developing natural fungicides derived from plant extracts and antagonistic microorganisms to combat plant pathogens, specifically targeting Sclerotinia sclerotiorum, a destructive fungal pathogen responsible for significant crop losses worldwide. The work builds on demonstrated evidence that the antagonistic fungus Coniothyrium sp. inhibits the growth and viability of Sclerotinia sclerotiorum sclerotia—the pathogen's resilient resting structures. By exploring plant extracts with similar antagonistic properties, the program aims to deliver eco-friendly crop protection solutions that reduce reliance on synthetic chemical fungicides.

Technical specifications

Key features:

  • Demonstrated efficacy: Sclerotia of Sclerotinia sclerotiorum (n=8) soaked in a Coniothyrium sp. suspension lost viability entirely
  • Direct-contact antagonism: Coniothyrium sp. in direct contact with S. sclerotiorum (n=8) disrupted fungal development and sclerotia viability
  • Dual-strategy approach combining antagonistic fungi and plant extract–based bioactive compounds
  • Focus on inhibiting mycelium growth and neutralizing sclerotia, addressing both active infection and long-term pathogen survival
  • Planned testing protocol to evaluate sclerotia viability after varying exposure durations to plant extracts
Technology readiness level

The technology is at an early research stage (TRL 2–3). Initial laboratory validation has confirmed the antagonistic effect of Coniothyrium sp. on Sclerotinia sclerotiorum. Future validation will assess plant extract effects on mycelium growth and sclerotia viability, with an estimated study duration of one year. The research team is actively seeking partners to provide equipment support and funding for key personnel to advance development toward field-ready formulations.
