A novel polyurethane adhesive synthesized from CO2-derived polycarbonate polyols offering tunable glass transition temperatures, superior peel strength, and enhanced hydrolysis and oxidation resistance for low-temperature bonding applications.
This solution presents a next-generation polyurethane (PU) adhesive formulated using polycarbonate (PC) polyols derived from CO2 and epoxides. Unlike conventional epoxy-based adhesives, this PU adhesive delivers superior peel strength, greater flexibility, and the ability to fine-tune the glass transition temperature (Tg) to match specific application requirements. Preliminary testing on glass substrates has demonstrated excellent adhesion performance, with a Tg range of -10°C to -30°C, making it well-suited as a low-temperature adhesive. The technology offers enhanced mechanical properties and improved resistance to hydrolysis and oxidation compared to polyether- and polyester-based polyurethane alternatives.
Key features:
The technology is currently at an early-to-mid stage of development. Preliminary results have confirmed excellent adhesion on glass substrates and validated the achievable Tg range for low-temperature applications. Future development will focus on synthesizing PU diols with precisely tunable Tg values, preparing pre-polymers, and incorporating hyperbranched polyurethane structures to create cross-linked PU adhesives with optimized performance characteristics. Further validation work is needed to scale synthesis, expand substrate compatibility testing, and characterize long-term durability under varied environmental conditions.
