A high throughput testing method utilizing the poker chip test to evaluate adhesive and coating strength and ductility. This method can process 20-50 samples daily, offering a simple way to distinguish between different materials' performance.
The practical poker chip test is an innovative method for evaluating the strength and ductility of adhesives and coatings. Building on a classic test developed over 60 years ago, this modern approach leverages the unique triaxial stress state within the sample to effectively distinguish between different adhesive and coating performances. Capable of processing 20-50 samples per day, it offers a high throughput solution ideal for industrial applications where rapid and reliable material assessment is needed.
The technology is currently at TRL 5, indicating that it has been validated in relevant environments and is nearing readiness for commercial application. Further validation with industry partners is planned to refine the testing protocols and expand its applicability.
The University of Illinois Urbana‑Champaign is a flagship public research university with large‑scale research capacity and a broad academic portfolio. An on‑campus Research Park co‑locates corporate R&D teams and startups with faculty, while the National Center for Supercomputing Applications provides advanced computing and data capabilities for collaboration. Integration with a regional health system and an engineering‑based college of medicine enables clinical translation, and a long‑standing extension network links campus innovation to partners statewide. Research is supported by competitive federal funding from NSF, NIH, DOE, USDA, and DoD. A technology transfer office streamlines IP, licensing, and startups, complemented by incubators and prototyping in the Research Park.
