A novel pest monitoring solution using environmental DNA sequencing of aerial particles for targeted pesticide application, enhancing biodiversity and ecosystem resilience.

Overview

Our innovative pest monitoring solution employs environmental DNA (eDNA) sequencing of aerial particles to enable precision pest management. By mapping pest species in real-time, this technology allows for the targeted application of less harmful pesticides, contributing to improved biodiversity and ecosystem resilience. This approach not only enhances crop yield but also reduces pesticide use and pest burden while preserving the overall biodiversity of agricultural fields.

Technical specifications

Using a bespoke sampler, environmental DNA is collected from aerial particles present in farm fields. The collected samples are then analyzed in our lab to identify pest species and assess biodiversity. This early detection system enables timely and precise pest control interventions, tailored to specific pest threats.

  • Field sampling: Conducted across various crop types including avocados, coffee, and soy.
  • DNA sequencing: Identifies pest species and assesses biodiversity.
  • Targeted interventions: Organic-approved pest control based on specific pest identification.
Technology readiness level

Currently at Technology Readiness Level 2, this solution has undergone initial field sampling and validation with plans for further testing in both conventional and organic farming setups. The proposed validation includes controlled trials comparing standard pesticide applications against our targeted approach using eDNA sequencing.

About Wild Genomics, Inc.

Wild Genomics, Inc. is an AgTech startup that provides precision pest monitoring services to the agricultural industry. The company utilizes a proprietary sampling device to collect environmental DNA from various agricultural settings, including farm fields, greenhouses, and livestock buildings. This DNA is subsequently analyzed by their laboratory team to provide pest identification, which helps farmers detect and manage infestations early. By offering this data-driven intelligence, the company aims to reduce the reliance on broad-acting pesticides and weed killers, thereby promoting biodiversity and lowering input costs for farmers.

Founded in 2023 and based in La Jolla, California, the company has participated in programs such as the Rady School of Management's Lab to Market initiative at U.C.-San Diego. The company operates as a funded entity, leveraging genetics and bioinformatics to create scalable biodiversity assessments. Their service model focuses on providing equipment to farmers with minimal upfront costs, allowing for more efficient monitoring compared to traditional scouting or trapping methods. The venture has received recognition for its approach to sustainable agriculture and economic impact.
