A reactive ionic liquid technology that improves the miscibility and mechanical performance of polypropylene (PP) and PP/PE blends, enabling higher recycling rates for No. 5 plastic. By incorporating ionic bonds at polymer interfaces during extrusion, the technology overcomes phase segregation and delivers impact-tensile property improvements difficult to achieve with conventional block-copolymer compatibilizers.
RoCo has developed a reactive ionic liquid (IL) compatibilizer that addresses one of the most persistent challenges in plastics recycling: the phase segregation of mixed polyolefins, particularly polypropylene (PP). Because high-molecular-weight polymers rarely mix uniformly, conventional PP/PE blends suffer from poor mechanical properties and limited reuse. RoCo's approach uses reactive ionic liquids added during extrusion to incorporate ionic moieties into the polymer backbone, forming ionic bonds at the interfaces between immiscible polymers. These ionic interactions are orders of magnitude stronger than the van der Waals forces that normally govern polymer mixing, resulting in stronger interfaces and dramatically improved miscibility. This enables the upcycling of PP and PP-rich waste streams into higher-value recycled materials.
Key features:
The technology is currently at a mid-stage development level. Proof-of-concept has been demonstrated with reactive ionic liquids dispersed effectively in polyolefin matrices, with rheology and mechanical testing confirming improved blend performance at laboratory and small pilot scale (~5 kg twin-screw extruder runs). Ongoing and planned validation activities include scaling ionic liquid synthesis to 200 g batches, developing masterbatch delivery systems, compounding with recycled PP and PE streams, injection molding of test specimens, and detailed rheological and mechanical characterization. Incorporation of recycled-content materials and development of a loading-level performance map are next steps toward broader commercial readiness.
RoCo, officially known as Liquid Ion Solutions, LLC, is an advanced materials company based in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, that specializes in the design, synthesis, and application of ionic liquids. Founded in 2014, the company utilizes these versatile compounds—often described as tunable liquid salts—as environmentally friendly alternatives to hazardous solvents for diverse industrial uses, including energy storage, polymer processing, and functional materials. Their technical capabilities are supported by in-house synthesis, rigorous testing, and a distribution partnership with IoLiTec, enabling them to provide both custom-engineered solutions and a commercial portfolio of ionic liquid products. The firm’s research and development efforts are frequently conducted in collaboration with academic institutions and supported by public funding from agencies such as the U.S. Department of Energy, NASA, and the USAF.
RoCo applies its chemical expertise to address complex global environmental challenges, specifically focusing on the circular economy and sustainable manufacturing. Key innovations include the development of ionic compatibilizers that facilitate the upcycling of plastics, such as polypropylene, by overcoming traditional mechanical property limitations. Furthermore, the company is engaged in CarbonTech initiatives, including the development of water-lean solvents for carbon capture and utilization, as well as research into recyclable, high-barrier packaging films and polyurethane waste reclamation. By providing consulting, feasibility studies, and cutting-edge materials technologies, RoCo helps corporate partners and industrial clients integrate sustainable, performance-driven solutions into their operations across sectors like packaging, clean energy, and waste management.
