Soliyarn LLC offers reactive vapor deposition technology to graft polymer, metal oxide, and composite coatings directly onto poly(L-lactide) films. This solvent-free process enables controllable coating thickness and functionality for biodegradable plastics, with applications in moisture barriers and composite materials.

Overview

Soliyarn LLC is advancing its proprietary reactive vapor deposition (RVD) technology to coat poly(L-lactide) (PLA) films with polymer, metal oxide, and composite coatings. PLA is a biodegradable plastic widely used in sustainable packaging and other applications, but it is notoriously difficult to coat or metallize using conventional methods. By using reactive monomers or organometallic precursors, the process covalently grafts coatings directly onto the PLA surface, producing films with controllable thickness and tailored functionality. This approach eliminates the need for customized pretreatment steps and opens new possibilities for enhancing the performance of biodegradable plastics.

Technical specifications

Key features:

  • Reactive vapor deposition enables grafted growth of polymer, metal oxide, and composite coatings directly on PLA film surfaces
  • Process uses reactive monomers or organometallic precursors to achieve covalent bonding with the substrate
  • Coatings can be engineered with controllable thickness and specific functionality
  • Solvent-free, water-free, and continuous vacuum-based process compatible with roll-to-roll manufacturing
  • Demonstrated capability to deposit ultrathin layers of biosafe moisture barrier materials such as aluminum oxide
  • Potential to create PLA-metal oxide composite materials through Lewis-acidic organometallic precursors that also drive ring-opening polymerization of lactide
  • Roll-to-roll systems already scaled for substrates up to 0.5 meters wide for textile and soft material applications
Technology readiness level

The underlying reactive vapor deposition chemistry has been validated on commercial textiles, where coatings have withstood over 200 residential laundry cycles. The company has demonstrated reactive vapor printing of metal-organic precursors to create conductive metal lines and circuit patterns on textiles, confirming the core chemistry. Roll-to-roll systems performing reactive vapor deposition have already been scaled up for substrates up to 0.5 meters wide. The next phase of development focuses on two validation pathways: depositing ultrathin biosafe moisture barrier layers such as aluminum oxide on PLA, and creating PLA-metal oxide composite materials using organometallic precursors that can simultaneously effect ring-opening polymerization of lactide.

About Soliyarn LLC

Soliyarn LLC is a textile technology company that utilizes a proprietary Chemical Vapor Deposition (CVD) process to transform commodity fabrics into high-performance, functional materials. By applying ultrathin polymer coatings in a solvent-free, water-free, and continuous vacuum process, the company imparts specific properties such as electrical conductivity, water repellency, and specialized dyeing without altering the original handfeel, breathability, or comfort of the fabric. This approach replaces resource-intensive, water-heavy traditional textile processing with a more sustainable, scalable, and environmentally friendly manufacturing platform.

The company focuses on creating next-generation smart wearables and functional apparel for diverse sectors, including the defense and textile manufacturing industries. Soliyarn has received multiple SBIR awards to develop technologies such as active-heating gloves for military personnel, which provide efficient thermal regulation using lightweight, sewable Joule heating elements. By eliminating the need for bulky wires or conductive threads, their technology enables the development of washable and durable smart garments. The company’s solutions address critical challenges in sweat management, thermal comfort, and sustainable textile finishing, offering business partners increased throughput and lower costs while significantly reducing environmental impact.
