Sustainable closures for paper beverage bottles combining natural fibres with recyclable polymers such as starch, PLA, HDPE, and blended systems. Designed to replace conventional plastic caps, enabling fully recyclable fibre-based beverage packaging while preserving barrier and sealing performance.

Overview

This research initiative develops recyclable, biofibre-based closures designed specifically for paper beverage bottles. The goal is to replace conventional plastic caps with a sustainable alternative built from natural fibres combined with recyclable polymers such as starch, PLA, HDPE, and blended polymer systems. By targeting the closure — historically one of the most difficult components to make recyclable in fibre-based beverage packaging — the work supports brand owners and packaging converters pursuing fully recyclable, plastic-reduced packaging portfolios.

Technical specifications

Key features:

  • Natural fibre reinforcement blended with recyclable polymers including starch, PLA, HDPE, and custom blended systems
  • Processing pathway based on compounding, blending, and injection moulding suitable for standard cap manufacturing equipment
  • Leverages established expertise in packaging polymers, films loaded with natural and synthetic functional materials, and food-contact-grade polymer formulation
  • Designed to meet the mechanical, sealing, and barrier requirements of beverage bottle closures
Technology readiness level

The project is at an early-to-mid research and development stage. Future validation activities include identifying the optimal polymer system, blending the polymer with biofibre in a suitable mixing system, injection moulding of prototype closures, and structured testing and validation. The research team has access to the full instrumentation required to carry out these activities in-house.

About Mahatma Gandhi University

Mahatma Gandhi University is a comprehensive public state university on the 110‑acre Priyadarsini Hills campus in Kottayam, serving a broad network of affiliated colleges across central Kerala. Industry engagement is anchored by the Business Innovation and Incubation Centre, established in 2016 with seed support from the Government of Kerala, which provides pre‑incubation, startup mentoring, and IP services. The MGU Innovation Foundation runs technology‑business incubation facilities and programs that convene bootcamps, broker MoUs, and connect companies with faculty and student entrepreneurs; an MoU with Kerala’s Bio360 Life Sciences Park extends access to the regional cluster and commercialization pathways. Research is sustained by competitive national and state funding from agencies such as DST, DBT, CSIR, and ICMR. A dedicated IP and licensing pathway through BIIC supports patenting, licensing, and startup formation.
