Sustainable packaging solution combining chitosan, corn starch, and sugarcane fiber to extend shelf life and reduce plastic waste. Targets food preservation and circular economy goals with recyclable, multi-use container design.

Overview

This proposal addresses the urgent need for sustainable packaging alternatives that reduce single-use plastic waste while extending the shelf life of packaged contents, particularly food products. The solution is a regenerative functional container made from a biocomposite of chitosan, corn starch, and sugarcane fiber. By combining antimicrobial and barrier properties with biodegradability and mechanical strength, the container aims to preserve freshness, reduce food waste, and support a circular economy through multiple-use cycles and compatibility with existing recycling streams.

Technical specifications

Key material components:

  • Chitosan provides antimicrobial activity and barrier properties that inhibit microbial growth and limit oxygen and moisture permeation
  • Corn starch contributes biodegradability and compostability, enhancing the environmental profile of the container
  • Sugarcane fiber delivers mechanical strength and rigidity, improving durability and handling performance

Target performance requirements:

  • Compatibility with existing PET, HDPE, or PP recycling streams
  • Effective barrier performance against oxygen and moisture transmission
  • Mechanical robustness suitable for storage and transportation
  • Chemical resistance to protect contents under typical retail conditions
  • Potential for extended reuse and refill cycles in real-world settings
Technology readiness level

The hypothesis remains at an early conceptual stage. While individual studies have explored the properties of chitosan, corn starch, and sugarcane fiber independently, the specific combination and its application in functional packaging containers have not yet been comprehensively validated. Future work includes developing the composite formulation, fabricating prototype containers, evaluating barrier and mechanical performance, assessing reuse and refill potential, and conducting a full life cycle environmental impact analysis compared to conventional single-use plastic packaging.
