Research Cyberinfrastructure: high-performance computing on the Tempest Supercomputer

Facilities & testing
University

Montana State University's Research Cyberinfrastructure operates Tempest, the largest supercomputer in Montana, offering CPU and GPU high-performance computing to researchers and instructors.

Overview

Tempest is a High Performance Computing (HPC) research cluster at MSU and the largest supercomputer in Montana. Tempest features over 15,000 CPUs, 150 GPUs, 2 Quantum Computers, powerful high-memory compute systems, a fast NVME storage system, support for long-running workloads, and an interactive web interface with graphical desktops, RStudio, JupyterLab, file transfer, and easy workload submission functionality. Tempest is designed to for large-scale modeling, simulation, data analysis, AI, and ML training workloads. RCI provides training and full support for the Tempest HPC system. To complement Tempest, RCI also offers large-scale persistent storage and virtual machine hosting services. RCI services are available to industry partners via an annual subscription for compute resource model.

Available services

  • High-performance parallel and high-memory CPU computing across EPYC x86 nodes
  • GPU computing on Nvidia T4, A40, A100, H100, and B6000 GPUs
  • Fast all-NVME high-speed storage
  • Photonic and superconducting quantum computers (in partnership with MSU's QCORE)
  • Large-scale, backed up, persistent data storage
  • Virtual server hosting

About Montana State University

Montana State University's substantial research enterprise growth has been accompanied by focused investments in innovation and research translation, creating new opportunities for companies to engage with MSU research and expertise. A particular strength is MSU’s network of specialized centers, institutes, and industry-accessible core facilities, which bring together multidisciplinary expertise, advanced research infrastructure, testing capabilities, and established pathways for working with industry partners. MSU is one of a select group of universities participating in the NSF's Accelerating Research Translation (ART) program, which is building the capacity and infrastructure needed to translate more research discoveries into solutions with real-world impact. The growing MSU Innovation Campus and expanding incubator infrastructure provide additional opportunities for university-industry interaction, startup development, and technology-focused companies. These efforts are complemented by MSU’s Technology Transfer Office, which works with researchers and companies to protect and license MSU inventions and facilitate industry-sponsored research collaborations.
