Respondic's polymeric adhesive technology uses reversible glass transition temperature activation to create strong, waterproof conformal contact. Designed for roofing shingles, this adhesive can be tuned to activate using solar heat, enabling reliable bonding across diverse surfaces including wet conditions.

Overview

Respondic, Inc. has developed a smart adhesive technology that bonds through a reversible change in material properties. When heated past its glass transition temperature (Tg), the polymer becomes pliable and forms strong conformal contact with a surface. Once cooled, the adhesive locks in place to deliver a durable hold. This mechanism is entirely physical, relying on van der Waals forces, which means the bond is fully waterproof and capable of adhering strongly even to wet surfaces. The glass transition temperature can be tuned to customer specifications, including activation by heat from sunlight, making this technology particularly well suited for outdoor construction applications such as roofing shingles.

Technical specifications

Key features:

  • Adhesion strength exceeding 5 atmospheres, validated in prior testing
  • Fully waterproof bonding, including reliable adhesion to wet surfaces
  • Reversible activation through controlled heating past the polymer's glass transition temperature
  • Material compatibility demonstrated with glass, tile, metal, wood, and resin substrates
  • Tunable Tg allowing customization for specific activation temperatures, including sun-driven heating
  • Physical adhesion mechanism (van der Waals forces) that preserves bond integrity at low temperatures

How it works:

The adhesive is cured directly onto the target surface. Upon heating past its engineered glass transition temperature, the polymer softens and conforms to the microscopic texture of the substrate, creating intimate contact. As it cools below Tg, the material rigidifies, locking in the bond. Because the mechanism is purely physical rather than chemical, the process can be reversed with reheating, enabling removal and repositioning.

Technology readiness level

The core adhesion mechanism has been validated through NSF SBIR-funded experiments, with results meeting or exceeding all initial grant research goals. Prototypes have been successfully cured onto metal and resin surfaces and tested for adhesion strength, material compatibility, and waterproof performance. Tg adjustment to customer-specific requirements has been demonstrated in published research. The next stage involves collaborating with a roofing industry partner to identify the exact asphalt shingle composition, obtain material samples, fabricate test samples by curing the adhesive onto shingles, simulate real-world ambient conditions, and iterate the design. The final deliverable will be a working demonstration of the adhesive applied to existing roofing products.
