Preclinical research program investigating ethanolic extracts of Sechium edule (chayote) fruits for nephroprotective and antidiabetic effects in streptozotocin-high fat diet induced diabetic nephropathy models. Offers partnership opportunities in natural product-based renal therapeutics development.
Diabetic nephropathy (DN) is a major long-term complication of diabetes mellitus, developing in more than 40% of patients even with glucose control, and remains the most common cause of end-stage renal disease. This research program investigates the therapeutic potential of Sechium edule (chayote) fruit extracts as a natural intervention for diabetic nephropathy. The program builds on preliminary findings demonstrating nephroprotective and antidiabetic activity of Sechium edule, with the goal of validating its effects on renal function, inflammatory markers, and kidney tissue pathology in validated animal models.
Research approach:
Validated preliminary findings:
Planned validation assessments:
This research is at the preclinical validation stage (TRL 3-4). Preliminary antidiabetic and nephroprotective activities of Sechium edule have been established in alloxan-induced diabetic rat models. The program is now advancing to a more clinically relevant STZ-HFD induced diabetic nephropathy model with comprehensive biochemical, molecular, and histopathological endpoints. The research is positioned to generate translational data supporting potential development of a natural product-based therapeutic intervention for diabetic kidney disease.
