Company

Innovative drug delivery system using self-emulsifying drug delivery systems (SEDDS) with hydrophobic ion pairs to enhance mucosal residence time and sustained release of active compounds.

Overview

The self-emulsifying delivery system leverages hydrophobic ion pairs, such as cetylpyridinium–fatty acid complexes, to effectively incorporate active compounds into an oily preconcentrate. This formulation strategy enhances the delivery of active compounds by allowing the preconcentrate to form nanosized oil droplets upon contact with saliva. These droplets, ranging from 50 to 250 nm in diameter, can penetrate deeper layers of mucus where they are retained through ionic interactions or hydrogen bonding. This technology aims to improve local therapeutic efficacy by increasing mucosal residence time and providing a sustained release of the active compound.

Technical specifications

Key features:

  • Utilizes hydrophobic ion pairs to embed active compounds within a self-emulsifying system
  • Forms oil droplets of 50 to 250 nm upon contact with saliva for deep mucus penetration
  • Retains active compounds in mucus through ionic interactions and hydrogen bonding
  • Tailorable release profile by adjusting hydrophobicity and stability of ion pairs
  • Potential applications in oral drug delivery with improved efficacy and residence time
Technology readiness level

Currently, the technology stands at Technology Readiness Level 3, indicating that the concept has been demonstrated analytically and experimentally in a laboratory setting. Future validation plans include the development of various prototypes for in vivo studies expected to be completed in 6-8 months.
