Innovative self-emulsifying systems for encapsulating hydrophobic bioactive compounds, enhancing therapeutic efficacy through stable micro- and nanoemulsions with biodegradable surfactants.

Overview

This technology offers a novel approach to encapsulating hydrophobic bioactive compounds through self-emulsifying systems. These systems enable the rapid formation of stable micro- and nanoemulsions, which enhance the therapeutic efficacy of the encapsulated active ingredients. By utilizing biodegradable surfactants, the system ensures environmental safety and minimal energy consumption during the encapsulation process.

Technical specifications

Key features:

  • Comprises an anhydrous isotropic blend of multiple surfactants and a hydrophobic compound.
  • Forms emulsions with droplet sizes ranging from 15 to 500 nm upon gentle agitation with water.
  • High kinetic stability due to interfacial turbulence generated by surfactant interaction with water.
  • Features biodegradable surfactants with varying HLB values to optimize droplet formation.
  • Utilizes high-frequency dielectric spectroscopy for droplet stability characterization.
Technology readiness level

The technology is at TRL 4, having been validated in laboratory settings. Future plans include optimizing surfactant combinations and testing in cell cultures and animal models to assess therapeutic effects on diseases like cancer.
