An integrated solution combining Purammon's proprietary electrochemical nitrogen removal technology with stormwater-activated micro-hydropower generation. This stand-alone system automatically activates during stormwater events to remove ammonia and nutrients without requiring external power, sludge handling, or biological processes.

Overview

Purammon has developed an innovative concept for a self-contained nutrient removal system that combines proprietary electrochemical treatment with stormwater-generated electricity. The system is designed to automatically activate when sufficient stormwater flow is available, creating a stand-alone treatment solution that requires no external power supply or additional inputs. This approach addresses a critical gap in stormwater management by enabling on-demand ammonia and nutrient removal in locations where grid power is unavailable.

The proposed system targets industries and municipalities facing increasing regulatory pressure to manage nutrient pollution from stormwater runoff. By eliminating the need for biological treatment processes, sludge disposal, or continuous power supply, the technology offers a fundamentally different approach to decentralized water treatment.

Technical specifications

Core electrochemical technology:

  • Proprietary, patent-pending electrocatalytic nitrogen removal process validated at commercial scale
  • Operates at leading chemical and fertilizer plant installations
  • Instant on-off capability enabling rapid response to variable conditions
  • High flow rate tolerance with insensitivity to flow or concentration volatility
  • Small physical footprint with easy relocatability
  • Precise target achievement, including capability for zero-discharge effluent
  • No sludge generation, eliminating disposal requirements
  • High reliability with low maintenance demands

Proposed integrated power system:

  • Micro-hydropower generator activated by stormwater flow
  • Commercially available generator components with published specifications
  • Automatic activation tied to stormwater availability
  • Designed as a fully self-contained, modular unit
Technology readiness level

The electrochemical nitrogen removal component is commercially validated and operating at scale in industrial settings, representing a high technology readiness level for that subsystem. The integration of stormwater-powered micro-hydropower generation is currently at an early feasibility stage. A proposed six-month research program would evaluate available small-scale micro-hydropower generators in laboratory conditions, test various stormwater compositions and flow rates, and develop a high-level system design. The feasibility of the integrated approach remains speculative pending validation, but if proven viable, subsequent work would assess costs and operating parameters for a complete stormwater treatment system.
