A process for extracting and separating inner barrier layers from polyolefin layers in multilayer films to enable material reuse and cost reduction. Uses selective solvents combined with heat and shear to recover high-value barrier polymers such as EVOH and nylon while preserving polyolefin integrity. Demonstrated on commercial multilayer film products and supports multiple recovery routes including precipitation, temperature-swing, and supercritical CO2 pressure-swing.
This solution addresses the challenge of separating interior barrier layers from polyolefin layers in multilayer polymer films. Using a patent-pending process that applies selective solvents together with heat and shear, the technology enables efficient recovery of high-value barrier materials such as ethylene vinyl alcohol (EVOH) and nylon while maintaining the integrity of polyolefin layers. The approach supports recycling of these materials and reduces overall system costs by enabling solvent reuse.
The technology is at TRL 4, validated in a laboratory environment. Future work includes further process development, scale-up, and economic analysis to support real-world application and commercialization.
