A cutting-edge SERS-based nano-sensor platform for rapid and accurate detection of viable tobamoviruses, leveraging plasmonic nanoparticles for high sensitivity. It offers rapid results within 1-2 hours, comparable to PCR, with minimal sample processing.
The SERS-based nano-sensor offers a revolutionary approach to detecting viable tobamoviruses by utilizing surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy. This innovative platform distinguishes viable pathogens through unique vibrational fingerprints of surface biomolecules and volatile organic compounds (VOCs). By organizing shape-controlled plasmonic nanoparticles into superlattices, the platform creates electromagnetic hotspots that significantly amplify Raman signals, enabling high detection sensitivity. The sensor supports high-throughput analysis, requires minimal sample processing, and delivers results within 1 to 2 hours, matching PCR sensitivity and accuracy.
The current technology readiness level is 2. Initial stages include the fabrication and testing of plasmonic nano-assemblies and functionalization with molecular probes. Future validation involves testing the sensor with laboratory-prepared samples and correlating data using chemometric tools to assess sensitivity and specificity.
The University of Toronto is a comprehensive public research university with three campuses in the Toronto region and a globally scaled research enterprise. Its downtown footprint is embedded within a major academic health network and an adjacent innovation district, enabling co-located labs, clinical trials, and rapid testing with end users. Companies connect through co-op and long-duration internships, sponsored research, and access to shared core facilities and prototyping resources. Research is supported by Canada’s Tri‑Agency (NSERC, CIHR, SSHRC) and the Canada Foundation for Innovation, alongside provincial programs and industry partnerships. A dedicated technology transfer office provides IP management, licensing, and startup support through a coordinated entrepreneurship network.
