Innovative microgel capsules utilizing silica-alginate shells encapsulate oil-in-water nanoemulsions for controlled hydrophobic delivery. These capsules offer tunable release through adjustable alginate crosslinking, ideal for pharmaceuticals and cosmetics.

Overview

The proposed solution involves the development of silica-alginate microgel capsules designed for the tunable delivery of hydrophobic compounds. These capsules encapsulate oil-in-water nanoemulsions within a silica-reinforced alginate shell, allowing for precise control over the release of active ingredients. This technology is particularly beneficial for applications in pharmaceuticals and cosmetics, where controlled release and stability of hydrophobic actives are critical.

Technical specifications
  • Capsule Structure: Composed of 5 to 15 um diameter alginate microspheres with a silica shell.
  • Tunable Delivery: The nanoemulsion concentration and the alginate crosslinking serve as independent tuning mechanisms, allowing for controlled diffusion of active ingredients.
  • Encapsulation Process: Utilizes acoustic extrusion to form calcium alginate beads, which are then coated with a silica shell through silanization.
  • Material Compatibility: Capable of incorporating various surfactants, oils, and hydrophobic ingredients.
  • Dynamic Control: Viscosity and mesh size of the alginate can be adjusted by modulating sodium and calcium ion ratios.
Technology readiness level

Currently at TRL 3, this technology is in the experimental proof of concept stage, with ongoing validations to optimize the synthesis process and evaluate release profiles using UV-vis spectroscopy.
