Xbrane Biopharma's silicalite-1 coating offers a PFAS-free, ultra-thin, hydrophobic layer for razor blades. Utilizing sol-gel hydrothermal growth, it enhances blade durability and reduces friction, providing PTFE-like non-stick properties. Ideal for scalable production.

Overview

Xbrane Biopharma introduces a cutting-edge silicalite-1 PFAS-free ultra-thin coating for razor blades. This innovative solution leverages advanced sol-gel hydrothermal growth techniques to create a durable, hydrophobic layer that significantly reduces drag and enhances shaving performance. The silicalite-1 coating forms a porous, water-repellent layer that traps air, mimicking the non-stick properties of PTFE, but without the use of PFAS. This technology promises improved blade longevity, reduced friction, and a superior shaving experience.

Technical specifications

The silicalite-1 coating is applied to razor blades using a sol-gel process that involves dipping nano-silicalite-1 seeds onto blades pre-coated with Cr, CrN, or DLC. A TEOS–TPAOH–water sol is then applied, followed by hydrothermal crystallization at temperatures between 120–130°C for 12–24 hours, resulting in crystalline films less than 0.5 μm thick. Optional silylation increases the coating's hydrophobicity, achieving contact angles greater than 150°. This PFAS-free ceramic coating is scalable, with production capabilities exceeding 10,000 m² per year.

Technology readiness level

Currently at Technology Readiness Level 4, the silicalite-1 coating has been validated on silicon and steel substrates. Future plans include further validation through automated dip-coating processes, extensive testing for adhesion, friction, and durability, and the preparation for integration into high-volume razor production lines. Full deployment is anticipated within 12 months.
