A novel sintering-leaching process that reduces chromium in LD slag while preserving essential nutrients for use as sustainable fertilizers. This technology enables chromium recovery, adding value to the process.

Overview

The sintering-leaching technology offers an innovative approach to reduce chromium content in LD slag, transforming it into an environmentally friendly and sustainable fertilizer alternative. By applying a controlled thermal treatment followed by selective leaching, this method not only minimizes chromium levels but also preserves valuable nutrients such as calcium, magnesium, manganese, and phosphorus. The process also presents an opportunity to recover chromium from the leachate, providing an added value to the operation.

Technical specifications

Process Steps:

  • Sintering: The LD slag is subjected to high-temperature sintering to stabilize essential nutrients in stronger phases, reducing their leaching potential while enhancing the leachability of chromium.
  • Leaching: Post-sintering, the slag is treated with an acid solution. Variables such as pH, acid concentration, and leaching time are optimized to maximize chromium extraction.
  • Recovery: The chromium-rich leachate is filtered, allowing for potential recovery of chromium, making the process economically beneficial.
Technology readiness level

This technology is currently at TRL 4, indicating that it has been validated at the laboratory level with further optimization and validation steps planned to enhance its commercial viability.
