An integrated monitoring and modeling platform that uses autonomous sensors, real-time data transmission, and computational models to estimate soil, organic matter, and nutrient losses caused by water erosion. Designed to support more accurate and cost-effective crop management decisions, particularly fertilization strategies, based on continuous field measurements.
Soil degradation caused by water erosion reduces agricultural productivity by depleting soil particles, organic matter, and essential nutrients. This solution addresses that challenge by combining autonomous field instrumentation with data management and computational modeling to monitor and estimate soil losses in real time. The platform enables farmers, agronomists, and land managers to make better-informed decisions about crop system management, including fertilization and land conservation practices, based on continuous local measurements rather than periodic sampling.
The offering is being developed by AGROSAVIA, a Colombian agricultural research corporation with deep experience in generating applied scientific knowledge and transferring technology to producers. The work targets improved soil productivity and sustainability through precision agriculture approaches aligned with Agriculture 4.0 principles.
Key features:
Prior research by the team showed that preliminary soil loss models built with 32 rainfall events and basic climatic and crop variables achieved coefficients of determination below 0.5, confirming that continuous data is required to build a robust predictive model.
The project is currently in the development and validation phase. Three specific objectives guide the work: deploying a smart autonomous instrument network, building a Big Data-backed information management system with a web interface, and training an initial computational model for soil, organic matter, and nutrient loss estimation. The planned validation period is approximately one year, after which the modeling tools are expected to move toward broader field evaluation and potential adoption by agricultural producers and land management stakeholders.
AGROSAVIA is a Colombian decentralized public entity of mixed non-profit participation dedicated to agricultural science, technology, and innovation. The organization focuses on generating scientific knowledge and developing agricultural technology through research, technological adaptation, and the dissemination of technical expertise. Its operations are organized into specialized innovation networks, including cacao, fruits, vegetables, livestock, permanent crops, and roots and tubers. By bridging the gap between advanced research and practical application, AGROSAVIA develops improved crop varieties, such as biofortified beans and sugarcane, and establishes integrated management protocols to enhance agricultural productivity and sustainability.
These efforts are vital for Colombian agricultural producers, providing them with the tools and knowledge necessary to improve competitiveness, ensure sustainable natural resource management, and raise their quality of life. Through initiatives like field schools and the provision of technical assistance, the corporation facilitates the transfer of technology and information to small-scale farmers. By fostering collaboration between the public and private sectors, AGROSAVIA acts as a key driver for technical change in the national agricultural sector, helping producers modernize their practices and address challenges related to climate resilience and food security.
