Anexa Vet Services offers a Strep uberis intramammary challenge model adapted for dry cows to study clinical and sub-clinical mastitis. This model, validated in lactating cows, will be adapted to determine infection timing and aid in intervention studies.

Overview

Anexa Vet Services presents a specialized Strep uberis intramammary challenge model tailored for dry cows, aimed at studying clinical and sub-clinical mastitis. This model has been successfully validated in lactating cows, demonstrating a high clinical mastitis rate of over 70%. The model's adaptation for dry cows will enable it to better understand and predict the timing and conditions under which mastitis occurs, offering valuable insights into intervention strategies.

Technical specifications

Key features:

  • The challenge model utilizes a well-characterized Strep uberis strain, known for its prevalence in both lactating and dry cows.
  • The strain is sensitive to all tested antibiotics and has been whole-genome sequenced for precise characterization.
  • Delivered by intra-mammary infusion, the model facilitates the study of infection dynamics during the critical early dry period and peri-calving.
  • The biobank includes additional mastitis pathogens for potential use, including Staph aureus, allowing for varied challenge scenarios.
Technology readiness level

The model is currently at Technology Readiness Level 5, indicating that it has been validated in relevant environments with lactating cows. The next steps involve adapting and validating the model for dry cows, with expected completion of initial validation in approximately one month of field work, preceded by 6-8 weeks of preparatory work.
